Sorting Challenge – Frozen Fruits (IQF or traditional)

The processing of frozen fruits can be characterized by a complex and heterogeneous product flow and the presence of many natural defects. Processors and packagers are inconvenienced by a myriad of foreign bodies, defective and contaminated products, which lower product quality and disrupt further production, when used as an ingredient.

Every fruit has its own characteristics but the main stages of sorting are after freezing or just before packaging. Products can be mono or mixes of fruits. In both cases sorting can be required beyond color criteria as foreign bodies (wood, shells, stones) as well as damaged products (rotten, blemishes,…) need to be ejected. The handling of the product needs to be optimized to prevent high levels of false reject (this means shooting out your good frozen fruits).

Typical defects can be product related (like shells, stones, wood, discolorations, molded, fragments,...) or foreign body contaminations (such as stones, plastics, dirt, metals, and many other foreign bodies) induced during harvesting or production. As in most cases these defects (reject) have a similar color, compared to your good fruits (accept), a classical color sort is insufficient to perform an acceptable clean up and quality sort.  A clean, virtually defect-free product however assures a high quality and influences significantly the end-user price.
