The production of dried vegetables is characterized by a difficult heterogeneous product flow and the presence of many small and wood-like defects (sometimes less than 1 mm in size). Processors and packagers are inconvenienced by a myriad of foreign bodies, defective and contaminated products, which lower product quality and disrupt further production, when used as an ingredient.

Defects can be product specific (like stems, capstems, sticks, grass, woodpieces, embedded stems, seeds, pits, pitfragments, foreign seeds...) or environment related such as contaminations from harvesting and production (like stones, embedded stones, glass, wood, plastic and many other foreign bodies).

As in most cases these defects (reject) have a similar colour, compared to your good product (accept), a classical colour sort is widely insufficient to perform an acceptable clean up and quality sort. Many times, the presence of these small defects, in combination with the irregular shape of the product, makes dried vegetables like tomatoes, paprika-peppers, onions,... an extremely difficult product to sort. A clean, virtually defect-free product however assures a high quality, longer conservation and influences significantly the end-user price.
